Mother's Day or Mothering Sunday
Mother's Day in the UK is always the fourth Sunday of Lent, although the actual Sunday chosen to celebrate it may vary depending on the dates of Easter and Lent. It is a day when children give presents, flowers and cards to show their appreciation. In Victorian times, it was a day when children (mainly daughters), who had gone to work as domestic servants, were given a day off to visit their family. It was considered important for people to return to their home or 'mother' church at least once a year, so each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their 'mother' church. This became an occasion for family reunions when children working away from home returned to visit their families, and brought gifts and flowers for their mother. Hence the tradition of giving flowers and gifts to your mother on Mother's Day. You can find a few ideas on our Mothers Day Gifts page, or our Ladies Gifts page.
Valentine’s Day
The Origin of Saint Valentine's Day on the 14th February is surrounded by mystery – not surprising when you consider that there were at least three different Saint Valentines.
There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts believe that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman priest who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for his jailer's daughter, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other stories tell that Saint Valentine was a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius had Valentine jailed and eventually beheaded for conducting illegal wedding ceremonies. Claudius claimed that married men made poor soldiers, and decreed that all marriages of younger citizens would be outlawed. Bishop Valentine, however, maintained that marriage was part of God's plan, and continued to conduct marriages in secret between young people, sometimes as young as twelve, in the name of love.
It was not until the year 496 A.D. that February 14th was set aside by Pope Gelasius to honour St. Valentine.
In the USA, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introduced in the 19th Century. These days an estimated one billion Valentines cards are sent!
Did you know… A few Valentines Day Traditions
In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.
In Wales, wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant "You unlock my heart!"
In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a young man. If she keeps the gift, it means she will marry him.
Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.
If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you will know how many children you will have.
